Hey, I'm a HUGE Defeater fan, I made that picture of darth vader with dear father lyrics a while ago that I posted on your wall haha. I just wanted to say I can't wait to see you guys in Toronto! You guys are seriously one of the most moving bands I have ever heard, and I am beyond excited to see you live.

Thanks man! It’s all about using the Schwartz.

Hey man, I've been trying to figure out the bass tones on the Defeater records, My band is heavily influenced by you guys and it'd be awesome to have tone that crushing.

They are all different actually.

Travels is an Ampeg v4

Lost Ground is a Bad Cat Lynx

ED&SN is an Ampeg v4 again.

I use the Full Tone Bass Drive II pedal a lot.  I’m always doing something really weird for the bass tone.  It usually makes sense in my head! haha.

Hey man, really into your band/studio stuff, I have a quick question... When recording and mixing guitars, what practices and typical EQ do you do for the mix to sound beefy yet so damn crisp and clean? At the moment I don't have much outboard gear and as far as my mic pre's they're just the ones on my interface and I have an outboard ART tube preamp, so I'm trying to get better sounds out of the gear I have now, instead of buying top dollar pre's. Thanks dude, Nick

Remember that guitar is a mid-range instrument so the tippity top and the super subs can get rolled right off.  I’m sure you’ve heard this answer a thousand times before but I can’t stress it enough.  Get the sound right at the source.  Instead of EQ move your mic first.  Great gear never hurts, but it’s only going to be that final 10% extra pro, the other 90% is all about making good choices and having a solid player.

Try starting about 2” off center from the cone pointed straight at the speaker.  Move the mic back a couple inches and see what it sounds like.  That’s usually a good starting point.  Every “type” of movement will have it’s own voice.  Turning it off axis sound different than just moving it straight back, and you’ll find the edge of the speaker isn’t nearly as bright as the center but will have a larger dynamic range.  Reference records you love to get a grounding point and experiment.  The beauty is that the more you mess around the more you learn which will make everything go much quicker on future efforts.

Most of my best guitar (or anything sounds) come really quickly.  The more I have to fight the more I know something very fundamental is wrong.  Sometimes this can actually just be the player which always sucks.  In those moments you need to put your producer hat on and get ready for the long haul hahaha.

Hope this kind of helps!  Sorry I don’t have any EQ magic tricks, they are all fake anyway!!

hey man, could you possibly tell me (or send a link that may contain) info on the guitars, amps, and tones used on Empty Days and Sleepless Nights? As a player and gear nerd this album has been growing on me a lot and I'm curious as to what was used

Pretty simple honestly!  American Tele (fresh strings a must), into a Bad Cat Lynx, into a Mesa Road King 4x12, into a royer 121.  Simple always wins!

Double walls, fully decoupled, dedicated silent heating / ac, and not a parallel wall in sight. That’s how it’s done. (Taken with instagram)
